What is Aswatona?

Our voices is a scholarship and a mentoring program that aims to connect and support podcasters within the WANA (North Africa and West Asia) region and Germany. We are committed to to build a transnational network for Arabic speaking podcasters to exchange and learn from one another. We achieve this through a series of workshops held online and in person. Each workshop has a thematic focus, which is the main topic of an audio podcast series produced by the participants in transnational teams.

The Podcast

Building upon the participants’ knowledge gained from the workshops, a twelve-episode podcast was created and dubbed in English and German. The episodes are co-produced by 5-6 transnational teams (2-3 podcasters each) after each workshop.

The participants could freely choose the focus and format of the podcast episodes within the framework of the workshops topic:

  • Environment
  • Gender
  • Power Dynamics

Why Podcast?

New, modern, easily accessible, high potential and great impact especially on youth– that’s how we see audio-podcasts.

The Podcast Community – we are nothing without our listeners

An engaging community is essential to any podcaster. We aim to build a community of listeners who want to actively participate in discussions and are not too shy to ask questions. Through social media, we want to offer a platform for vivid interactions and dialogue. Get involved!

The WANA Podcast Map

Curious to discover more interesting podcast about West Asia and North Africa?

If yes we have a handy tool for you! We created the first searchable Podcast Map for the region, where you can find podcasts talking about Westasia and North Africa and/or podcasts located in this area. Our goal is to increase the visibility of the diverse podcast scene in the WANA region and to make it more accessable for people from outside this part of the world.

The Workshops

In 2021, three workshops and network meetings with 18 podcasters from North Africa, West Asia and Germany were held online (#Covid-19) and in Albania. The aim of the workshops was to exchange knowledge and to share experiences on the topics of environment, power dynamics, and gender. The focus lay on female* podcasters and their prospects and influence in society.

In addition to exchanging ideas and experiences, we wanted to encourage and empower podcasters in their future endeavors.

Nahostcast e.V. was founded by the podcast collective Nahostcast. The idea behind the project was to offer perspectives on the WANA-region that are seldom presented by mainstream media and lacking in the podcast community. Our approach is to talk with people instead of about them. Therefore, we invite guests from different regions to share their stories and knowledge. In this way, we aim to break up stereotypes and prejudices and question commonly held views in our society. Additionally, through Nahostcast e.V., we initiate projects and workshops to pass on our expertise in podcast production, while sharing our vision of a more diverse, tolerant and feminist society.

MitOst e.V. connects motivated people in a diverse and open network in Europe and its neighbouring regions. MitOst supports cultural exchange and civil society engagement through its projects. The goal of the association is a lively civil society that goes beyond cultural, linguistic and political borders.
